My wife and I save dollar bills and change throughout the year, then cash it in during August. It pays for our two girls’ elementary school book rental, our annual camping and canoeing trip, and usually leaves a little for dinner.
I usually save an extra $150 to $250 per month. I take the money to the bank each month and add all the coins from my pockets, purse, and car too. It grows into a couple extra thousand dollars each year, easily and painlessly.
The plan is simple; it just takes a little discipline. We have paid for every vacation using this method and still had enough money left over to pay our yearly taxes.
I started at the end of January 2010 while unemployed and barely getting by. By the end of September, I had more than $800 in dollar bills alone, plus over $50 in coins.
